Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to have any experience?
No. Most of our new fencers have never held a blade, and plenty have never watched a bout. Beginner classes start with safety, footwork and bladework, so you’ll learn everything you need from scratch.
Do I need to buy my own equipment?
No. We provide all beginner gear — mask, jacket, glove and weapon — for your first classes. Most fencers wait until they’re sure they want to continue before buying their own kit, and our coaches are happy to advise when you’re ready.
How old do I have to be to fence?
Our youth classes start at age 8, with groups for cadets, juniors and adults. There’s no upper limit — plenty of our members picked up the sport as adults.
What is taught in the Beginner Class?
Beginners learn the fundamentals of foil and épée: safety and etiquette, footwork, blade work and basic tactics. You’ll be bouting with classmates within the first few weeks, then progress into advanced groups and open bouting as you develop.

Iconic Fencing Club is a welcoming community club in Wallingford, CT, offering coaching for every level from first-timers to competitive fencers. We’re a USA Fencing member club and SafeSport compliant, with experienced coaches and a full weekly schedule of classes, footwork and open bouting.
